Actualy Half Life, the first one, happened in New Mexico. They were working on an endless energy source, which the LHC is supposed to do. I read an article last night about them trying to keep a mini sun from hitting the walls of the LHC is the biggest problem. If it hits the walls the LHC will resonate. If it resonates too much it will cause a resonance cascade, which was what ripped open the portal, and is a real thing in physics.

In short, we're all screwed.

Another scary thing :
When they came on the idea of making the LHC, Half-Life 1 was released !
